On-Farm Field Day: Reduced Tillage in Organic Vegetable Systems

Date:Monday, September 24, 2012
Time:1:00 - 3:00 PM

Details:No-till production systems have been gaining acceptance with 88 million acres, nearly 36-percent of all U.S. cropland, currently under production. Cropland under reduced tillage benefits from improved soil structure and reduced soil erosion. However, much of this land grows corn, small grains, cotton, and soybeans with the aid of herbicides. Lucky for us, organic researchers and innovative growers joined forces to develop reduced tillage management systems for organic vegetables, where tillage is normally the number one tool used to combat weeds. In a reduced tillage trial at Jubilee Farm, barley, pea, and vetch were planted as summer cover crops to suppress weeds in fall transplanted chard, kale, and collards. Come and see organically-approved methods to terminate cover crops that do not require tillage as we demonstrate termination and transplanting aids in the field. Organic no-till management practices, techniques and basic principles such as cover crop selection, mechanical termination, and particular weed management challenges will be among the topics covered by WSU Research and Extension Faculty Doug Collins, Andrew Corbin, Chris Benedict and Andy Bary. Cover crops are key to successful reduced tillage organic agriculture systems. Washington State University Extension researchers have been trialing cover crops at research stations and on cooperating farms for their suitability in organic production over the past four years. However, for successful Western Washington organic no-till production, unique challenges include cover crop variety selection, acquisition and use of specific equipment, and timing of cover crop termination. This field day is free and open to the public, no advance registration necessary.
